My Book Blog

I just don't have time to review books, sadly. I had to leave most of my review groups. I review for readingdeals, Librarything Early Reviewers, and any giveaways I manually review. I also review horror books if an author emails me directly at edeawitch at hotmail dot com.

Bad Games: A Novel

Bad Games: A Novel - Jeff Menapace This was a great thriller/horror novel. The two brothers are deliciously evil, and they have humor which is great. These are interesting villains. I can't wait to read the other two. Geez!

Magicide

Magicide - Carolyn V. Hamilton I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This mystery is about a magician's death in front of millions. There are many shady characters, including the magician's own son.

This was a quick and easy read, and kept it entertaining. It gives us a look behind Las Vegas magician life, and was quite good.

Swan Deception

Swan Deception - Glede Browne Kabongo I was given a copy for an honest review.

This book started off great. Someone wants to punish Dr. Shelby Cooper and is threatening her entire family. She is soon framed for a crime she didn't commit and her husband has to try to suss out the real criminal.

The book was engrossing and page-turning. Until the ending. Just how did Shelby and her husband figure it out? It's never told. The ending is very rushed and abrupt, and is a true anticlimax.

Awaken At Twilight (A Vampire Anthology)

Awaken At Twilight (A Vampire Anthology) - Kristen Middleton, C.M. Owens, Chrissy Peebles, W.J. May, C.J. Pinard, J. Wells, L. Wells, Book Cover By Design I was given a copy for an honest review.

This Anthology was great. If you like vampires, you'll probably like this one. There is action, romance, paranormal, mysteries, and thrilling plots. I especially liked how some vampires are different than the norm.

Alpha

Alpha - Jasinda Wilder I was given this book free for an honest review.

Alpha is a very erotic story of Kyrie and a mysterious benefactor. Kyrie lives a great life for a year with monthly checks, until a ma comes to collect. Collect what? Well, Kyrie! Yep, the benefactor wants his payment, and Kyrie is what he wants! He has strict rules, and the seduction begins at dinner.

HOT HOT HOT! I could NOT put this one down, and stayed up all night tapping at my Kindle.

Alice's Adventures in Underland: The Queen of Stilled Hearts

Alice's Adventures in Underland: The Queen of Stilled Hearts - DeAnna Knippling I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This Victorian zombie tale is very interesting. It's not your typical mindless, flesh-eating zombies. These zombies are basically human, but are shackled and treated like slaves. Alice is under constant nagging from her mother, who wants her to be a ""proper lady.""

This book really shows the oppression of women in Victorian Times, and touches on class-ism. A great read!

Reincarnation and Past Life Memories: Amazing Real Life Stories (Time Travel Books Book 7)

Reincarnation and Past Life Memories: Amazing Real Life Stories (Time Travel Books Book 7) - Richard Bullivant I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book was very informative about past lives. I really enjoyed the Egyptian Priestess story. I love Ancient Egypt and found it fascinating. Also, the green walled discovery that baffled the archaeologists.

I also enjoyed the scientific theories at the end. That consciousness is all around us and enters our brain, it is not just electrical stuff in the meat.

Ogden

Ogden - Cory Abernathy I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This was a typical zombie book. The only two characters I cared about were the dogs. I was rooting for them the whole time.

I wish the character were more fleshed out, and the plot seemed to meander a bit in the end. If you like zombie books, you may like this.

Above the Pines

Above the Pines - Robert Bradford I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This was a frustrating read. It was full of typos. ""Glared"" is not the same as ""stared."" ""Passed"" and ""past"" are different as well. This really grated on me. Sam ""glared"" at everything, when sometimes it is obvious it is ""stared.""

The story was jumbled and it was very obvious who did it. The only shocking part was the ending, when Sam outed the perpetrator.

It was very sad to see Isis struggling with her hurt. I just wish the story would be more tight and coherent.

A Nerd Girl's Guide to Cinema

A Nerd Girl's Guide to Cinema - Kelly Cozy I was given a free copy for an honest review.

A Nerd Girl's Guide to cinema is a book of reviews about ""lesser known movies."" The genres range from horror, sci-fi, drama, and even romance.

Kelly's reviews are very insightful and she has a distinct personality. As a writer she gets into the characters' minds and actions. She is humorous and a bit snarky at times.

I thoroughly disagree with her review of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang however. I just couldn't get past that scathing review. As a child of the 70s she seems to like movies that are ""boring as heck"" to me. But that is her opinion, of course.

Overall the reviews are insightful. I even added a few to my queue.

Paleo - The Doomsday Prepper

Paleo - The Doomsday Prepper - David Liss, Eileen Curtright I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book contains two novellas. Paleo is a strange story about a group of men who are on the paleo diet and live like cavemen. A middle-aged man joins the group and finds out just how powerful the spirit animals are.

The second story is about preppers. A man and his family struggle to survive the EOT. End of times.

These stories had unlikable characters and it is a struggle to finish the stories. The second story is interesting but goes nowhere.

Resist

Resist - Anne-Rae Vasquez I was given a free copy for an honest review.

Resist is the second book of the trilogy. The character arc is much greater in this book. The action is ramped up and we learn more facts about the end times. Most second books in a trilogy are bridgers that aren't very interesting. Resist doesn't have that problem!

Doubt

Doubt - Anne-Rae Vasquez I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book was slow to start off, but quickly gained pace. The whole online game aspect was not explained at all. I would have liked to learn more about it. I also don't like how rude Doubt it. I hope the characters are fleshed out in the next books.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty Shades of Grey - E.L. James I got to 65% and gave up. I watched CinemaSin's Everything Wrong With 50 Shades in 18 minutes just to know how it ended. Thanks Youtube!

Her name is my name. UGH.

The Bookshop Hotel

The Bookshop Hotel - A.K. Klemm I was given a free copy for an honest review.

The Bookshop Hotel tells the story of AJ, a young widow. She inherits an old hotel and goes about renovating it and turning it into a bookshop/hotel. It is a very interesting premise.

AJ is a bit over her head and hires a partner in Matthew. He renovates the hotel and helps out in general. But can they be actual partners?

The book is very short, and I would have liked for the romance to be a bit more fleshed out, but overall it's a cute book.

Enter At Your Own Risk: Fires and Phantoms

Enter At Your Own Risk: Fires and Phantoms - Alex Scully, Robert Dunbar, Andrew Wolter I was given a copy for an honest review.

This anthology was very good. It had a mix of classic horror and modern. The theme isn't apparent in all of the stories, which is places or situations you shouldn't enter. I enjoyed all the stories, which is very rare for an anthology. The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle one was awesome. I love revenge!
