My Book Blog

I just don't have time to review books, sadly. I had to leave most of my review groups. I review for readingdeals, Librarything Early Reviewers, and any giveaways I manually review. I also review horror books if an author emails me directly at edeawitch at hotmail dot com.

The Lion Trees, Part 2: Awakening

The Lion Trees, Part 2: Awakening - Owen Thomas I was given a free copy for an honest review.

The conclusion to the epic family drama. This was very interesting, especially David's story. I had no idea how it would go down.

Hollis was an idiot, and he lost everything. It was so sad. The story of the fish was shocking. I can't believe he never reminisced about it.

I'm glad Susan finally stood up for herself and did what she believed in.

Tilly was still a dumb sloot. I wanted to skip her chapters, but I stuck through it in the end. She just can't be happy.

An amazing read, but part 2 has multiple spelling and grammar errors. Your and you're especially. It was just something that bugged me. Part 1 didn't have nearly as much errors.

Fairy Tale Murders

Fairy Tale Murders - Kelly Money I was given a free copy for an honest review.

The Fairy Tale Murders is a great thriller. You get a lot of perspectives. The killer, the detective, and the victims. I couldn't believe how dumb the vicitims were. Even if they knew a killer was running around, hey that guy's cute, so I'll be alone with him!

I was interested because the theme of fairy tales interested me. Well, this is the Disney version because the killer is obviously going off the animated Disney movies. I have no problem with that, but the Disney versions are watered down Grimm stories.

We know who the killer is from the beginning. The detectives are kind of.. dumb. Now I know this is a trope, but god. You go with your gut.

Expiration Date

Expiration Date - I was given a free copy for an honest review.

An anthology with death as the theme. When your time is up, it's up! Or you can make a deal with Death, but much like a genie, he will screw you over. Oh, death! You're such a character.

These stories ranged from average to great. I only knew of one author, Kelley Armstrong. I'll be honest and say I wasn't impressed with her short story. I was very impressed with ""Prison Break.""

Since I'm watching The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, the story ""What Would Lizzie Borden Do"" amused me greatly.

The EC Archives: Vault of Horror Volume 4

The EC Archives: Vault of Horror Volume 4 - Various Good God, two boy deaths in this volume! Hardcore.

Dark Horse, for God's sake, your editor needs to do their job. Lorna's name is ""Laura"" three times in the story Smoke Wrings. Also, the print job on my library book is very bad. Words are missing or half-printed.

He Who Walks in Shadow

He Who Walks in Shadow - Brett J. Talley I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This is a great Lovecraftian novel. It is a collection of journal and diary entries. A professor and his protege are looking for a staff and a jewel to stop the end of the world. Of course it's never easy to stop the Old Ones, and it's a thrilling struggle to read.

Abducticon

Abducticon - Alma Alexander I was given a free copy for an honest review.

Abducticon had a chance to be a really great book. Sadly, it is tedious and boring. If you've seen Terminator 2, you know how it will end. The British slang is strange, seeing as how mostly everyone is American.

Absence of Mind

Absence of Mind - H.C.H. Ritz I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book is an interesting sci-fi novel. It reminded me of that ""Overlogging"" episode of South Park. People are dependant on their ""Navis"", a technology sort of like smartphones, only implanted in the brain, eyes, and ears.

Phoebe is a nurse that works at a hospital when suddenly a lot of people are brought in behaving aggressively. The hospital is soon overwhelmed, and to make matters worse Phoebe is in a car accident with a manual-driven car driven my a woman named Mila.

When Pheoebe's younger brother Jamie is stricken with ""HAD"" Mila, a programmer for Navi, helps find out what's wrong. The two women soon discover a conspiracy and things get intense.

I really enjoyed this novel. Just so you know, there is same-sex situations, but nothing too explicit. This held my attention and I had to hunch over my Kindle as it was charging because I didn't want to tear my eyes away!

Children of the Mark

Children of the Mark - Michael W. Garza I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book is a Lovecraftian tale for teens. AJ and his friends Clair and Dougie stumble into a cult and AJ is given powers. They are followed by the cult, and AJ's father is drawn into the cult's folds.

This book was good, but there wasn't enough Lovecraft for me. I know it's for teens, but at least explain more. I see this is Book 1 so hopefully there is more information in later volumes. Also, when I think ""Lovecraft"", it's not happy endings.

The Lion Trees, Part 1: Unraveling

The Lion Trees, Part 1: Unraveling - Owen Thomas I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book is an epic about a family. Arrested Development sprang to my mind, with the family being so dysfunctional.

Hollis is a retired man who thinks he is wise and above everyone else. He starts to lose it completely. Susan is a martyr who complains endlessly about her husband. She starts to withdraw. Tilly is a Hollywood starlet who is promiscuous and a bit dumb, despite her education. She has a huge scandal. David is a high school teacher who is mediocrity itself. He too gets in a scandal, only worse. I think I know who the real ""DJ"" is in David's story, but I have to find out in the next part.

A warning : This book is LONG. An epic book. Both parts, according to my Fire, would take 50 hours of reading to complete. It is very worth it. Written with humor, this book had me cracking a wry smile.

The Ruby Queen (The Soiled Dove Sagas Book 1)

The Ruby Queen (The Soiled Dove Sagas Book 1) - Lori Bradley I was given a free copy for an honest review.

The first book in the Soiled Dove Trilogy, The Ruby Queen is an excellent read. Mattie is abandoned by her boyfriend and ran out of town. She meets a prostitute named Roxie who takes her on as a protege.

Mattie soon learns all there is to being a prostitute and makes good money. She still thinks about her old life on the farm and her family, though.

I can't wait for the second book. I want to know if Mattie finds love.

Loonies

Loonies - Gregory Bastianelli I was given a copy for an honest review.

This book is written very well. Brian is a journalist who is bored with the small-time news, which is nothing of note. His wife finds a trunk in their new house, and things get interesting.

Brian is not a very good husband. He ignores his wife and seems to never be at home. I felt bad for her.

As for the mystery, it keeps you guessing. I had no clue, as there's red herrings galore.

The Year of the Hydra

The Year of the Hydra - William Broughton Burt I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book is bizarre. It's hard to follow and understand, what with the constant flashbacks and other weird things going on.

I did not care for Julian at all. The woo references were on overdrive. This is a VERY new age novel. Julian is high most of the time, so maybe that's why this book is so hard to follow. Also, Tree is a stereotypical black woman.

There is also the underage girls that raised my eyebrows. I don't care if it's ""legal"" in China it is disgusting.

I finished this book just to see if Julian dies.

Triumph: Collected Stories of Gone Girls and Complicated Women

Triumph: Collected Stories of Gone Girls and Complicated Women - Lizzie Harwood, Jennifer Butler I was given a copy for an honest review.

Honestly, there isn't much ""Gone Girl"" suspense in this collection of stories. Most are outright boring, and the few suspenseful ones are told with detachment.

A Wrinkle in Crime: 10 Stories of Foul Play, Murder & Revenge

A Wrinkle in Crime: 10 Stories of Foul Play, Murder & Revenge - Joel Arnold I was given a free copy for an honest review.

The collection of stories are very good. I especially liked the last one, about the pearl. Most of the endings have a ""twist"" to them.

Through the Woods

Through the Woods - Emily Carroll I'm glad this was a library rental. Only one good story out of five. Quite boring overall.

Cruel Devices

Cruel Devices - George Wright Padgett I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This was a great ghost story, and I'm not really into those. Gavin is a thriller writer and he finds an old typewriter that he wants to give to his friend for their birthday. The Hungarians won't sell it to him, so he steals it. Not a good idea, and it's soon clear that the typewriter wasn't for sale for a good reason. The spirit of a woman who wants to come back to life haunts the typewriter.
