My Book Blog

I just don't have time to review books, sadly. I had to leave most of my review groups. I review for readingdeals, Librarything Early Reviewers, and any giveaways I manually review. I also review horror books if an author emails me directly at edeawitch at hotmail dot com.

A Matter of Breeding: A Biting History of Pedigree Dogs and How the Quest for Status Has Harmed Man's Best Friend

A Matter of Breeding: A Biting History of Pedigree Dogs and How the Quest for Status Has Harmed Man's Best Friend - Michael Brandow I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book made me so sad for the ""purebred"" dogs. They are suffering for our vanity. Pugs can't breathe correctly, Labs have early arthritis and more! The breeding ""standards"" are devastating to the dogs. I agree with the author that changes need to be made. If you are a dog lover with an open mind, read this book!

The Pen Name

The Pen Name - David Jacob Knight I was given a free copy for an honest review.

I read the author's second book, The Telephone Company first. I absolutely LOVED it. I saw this on LT after I reviewed the Telephone Company, and rushed to click the giveaway.

This book is very different. It reminded me of Phillip K Dick. Weird bizarre things happen. ""OK this guy is totally cray."" Is Ben crazy or is the world? Just what the HELL is going on?!

The nods to Stephen King are abundant. Since King is my favorite, I loved it. Also, Ben Little. Bentley Little?

Ben Little is an indie author and he wants to hit the big-time. Faustian contract with a big-time author arrives, and of course he doesn't read the fine print. The author texts Ben, and things quickly escalate into strange territory. His wife and disabled son are affected, and things spiral into WTFery quickly.

The Telephone Company was the second best book of 2014 for me. The evil was delicious. The Pen Name has evil, but nowhere near the deliciousness of the Telephone Company. Also, the Pen Name is a bit hard to follow. But it is definately a must read for horror fans. I don't really think of it as a ""thriller.""

Gone Bitch: A Parody of Gone Girl

Gone Bitch: A Parody of Gone Girl - Steve Lookner I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book was a bit much, even for me. The constant sex, and the ultimate taboo was distasteful. It took away from any humor the book trying for.

Daimones

Daimones - Massimo Marino I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book desperately needs a better translation. The copy I received had numerous wrong words and tenses, not to mention the spelling.

Overall the book was decent, if a bit cliched. The part with Laura really bothered me, but I must be in the ""old way"" of thinking. The women were pretty much useless, and they went into hysterics whenever Dan left the house.

The ending was abrupt and rushed, and I hope the next two books explains the aliens and why they did what they did.

The Maze Bummer: A Parody of The Maze Runner

The Maze Bummer: A Parody of The Maze Runner - Steve Lookner I was given a free copy for an honest review

This book is a parody of The Maze Runner, which I never read but saw the movie. It is a short book, so things aren't explained very well. I'm sure some women will be offended by the Heavers. There are a lot of sex and peen jokes, but these are frat boys so that's to be expected.

Overall a decent parody.

The Phone Company

The Phone Company - David Jacob Knight I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This is the second best book I've read in 2014. It was engaging, and quite amazing. I was sick over the holidays so I had a lot of time to read.

Steve lost his wife to cancer, and five years later The Telephone Company moves into town. They seem to assimilate into everything, using smartphones with disturbing apps. The Phone Company gets more disturbing and controls the town. Steve's kids JJ and Sarah get the smartphones and are drawn into the apps. They can get popular, play ""war games"", and spy on people. Steve's best friend Bill is a cop who resists the Phone Company's glasses, which are like Google Glass. It is impossible for him to do things since the Phone Company is integrated into the police force.

The disturbing entity that is really the Phone Company appears, and is Lovecraftian and pretty awesome. READ THIS BOOK!

The Woman In The Trunk

The Woman In The Trunk - Theo Cage I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This was a short story about a ""junk shop"" couple and a piece of jewelry that is unknowingly worth a lot of money. A Syrian man finds the jewerly and knows how much it is worth, but the husband stubbornly refuses to sell it.

The story was very easy to figure out from the get-go when the detective tells the woman her father was murdered. It is well-written, however.

Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come - Mark Collington I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This was a unique sci-fi novel, which is rare. The idea of different Realms from historical periods was interesting. The private detective Jasper soon finds himself overburdened with cases in a '30s noir Realm. All of them are connected to an uprising against the Kingdom, the powers that be.

Animus

Animus - Thomas Evans I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book was great. I couldn't put it down. Jason Tucker is drunk and kills a father and puts his girl in a coma. The mother of the daughter in a coma's insurance doesn't want to spend more since it has been over three years. Her other daughter goes to school with Jason Tucker's daughter.

This book is about obsession and revenge, and the failure of the justice system.

The Fault in Our Pants: A Parody of "The Fault in Our Stars"

The Fault in Our Pants: A Parody of "The Fault in Our Stars" - Steve Lookner I was given a free copy for an honest review.

I never watched the movie or read the book, but I did watch Everything Wrong With The Fault In Our Stars on Youtube.

Augustus Gloop. I couldn't get that damn name out of my head and I had to stop myself and re-read his last name over and over. I also had the image of the fat kid in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory saying ""Hungry!"" when Augustus made fun of Hazel's vegetarianism. Perhaps he wanted chocolate.

This book was quite funny. I enjoyed how sex-crazed Augustus was, and how Hazel was such a a-hole b. The part where she licked her finger and rubbed it on the little girl and said ""I just gave you cancer"", I laughed so hard. That was awesome.

I also laughed at how douchey it was to steal Isaac's wish.

I can't wait to read Gone Bitch, another movie and book I'm not familiar with.

Angel Manor

Angel Manor - Chantal Noordeloos I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book read like a B-movie that dealt with haunted houses and ""Satanic Panic."" It started off OK, then was great, and then ended a bit ridiculously. I wondered why the heck Freya just didn't turn around and leave the house the very first day.

This book also reminded me of The Last Cabin in the Woods, and that is a good thing. This will be a series apparently, and I have an idea of who the next sacrifice will be..

A Murder of Crows

A Murder of Crows - DeAnna Knippling I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This anthology was fantastic. There is a little of everything in this book. Zombies, dark fantasy, demons, and more. The wrap-around story is about a murder of crows who tell stories.

I never read a book by this author before. I was very impressed.

Breast Self-Examination: Speedy Study Guides

Breast Self-Examination: Speedy Study Guides - Speedy Publishing I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This ""book"" was 6 pages, and there were no diagrams or illustrations about proper examination positions and how to feel your breast to check for lumps.

Soap Making Ultimate Guide With Recipes (Boxed Set): 3 Books In 1 Ultimate Soap Making Guide For Beginners With Easy to Make Recipes

Soap Making Ultimate Guide With Recipes (Boxed Set): 3 Books In 1 Ultimate Soap Making Guide For Beginners With Easy to Make Recipes - Speedy Publishing I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This boxed set was a great introduction to soap making, much better than the other boxed set. This boxed set has many recipes for soaps, including Christmas Soap. It goes into detail about cold vs hot, how to add scents, and how to store soap making materials. A good deal all around.

Soap Making Made Easy Ultimate Guide To Soap Making Including Recipes: 3 Books In 1 Boxed Set

Soap Making Made Easy Ultimate Guide To Soap Making Including Recipes: 3 Books In 1 Boxed Set - Speedy Publishing I was given a free copy for an honest review.

I liked the first book, Soap Making Made Easy. It was an in-depth book that had quite a variety of recipes and tips.

All books used the same stock footage and had very few pages. The other two books seemed very rushed and did not go into detail.

Soap Making: The Practical Guide: A Steps-By-Step Simple Guide to Making Traditional and Natural Homemade Soaps Quickly, Easily and

Soap Making: The Practical Guide: A Steps-By-Step Simple Guide to Making Traditional and Natural Homemade Soaps Quickly, Easily and - Kit Miko Michiko I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book is a very basic introduction to making soaps. The photos are all stock photos, there is no ""personal touches"" added, and it seems like a rush job.

There are very few recipes for soaps as well. I'd suggest a better book if you're new to soap making.
